Disaster

Monday 10th November

Over the weekend, I experimented with using vegetable pigments for colouring clothes. I mixed up some beetroot juice with fixative chemicals, boiled it up and put one of my white t-shirts in for a few hours.

After cooling, I gave it a rinse through, and then washed it (separately of course) in the washing machine.

Unfortunately all the colour came out. It was a disaster.

I… wait for it… are you ready…

it’s really not worth it… all that effort for one poor joke…

I nearly DYED!

  8. Well, at least your washing machine works. If I had got food all over my clothes I bet it woud never wash out.
Try onion skins and leave it to cook for a bit. Then leave it on the line to dry in the air for a couple of days. Give it time to really set.
Do a nice drawing on it with indian ink (that will NEVER wash out) and when it’s been hanging about for about a week give it a wash on about 40 degrees.
If THAT doesn’t work I’d be surprised.
Did you chop up the beetroot so that it bled fully?
Did you firstly wash the shirt on super-hot to boil all the chemical guck out of it?
Best of luck with your experiment. I don’t know why but it’s the kind of thing I really like.
You could always try turmeric. That stuff never comes out of anything.
