Simply Stu Goat for a Better Future

Fujisan

Wednesday 8th November

Right… that’s it… I’ve decided. I’m going up Mount Fuji. I’d like to do it in one of the next 5 summers.

This trip will involve a tough hike on a 6.3km trail of mostly volcanic rock and ash starting at 7,562ft and ending at 12,388ft (average 23% gradient), probably taking in the region of 9 hours up and 4 down plus an overnight stay part-way up with 1.5′x6′ space on a shared futon in an unheated hut.

Who’s coming with me?

As the Japanese say… “You’re a fool to never climb Mt. Fuji. You’re a bigger fool to do it twice.”

  3. Hutters: Yes, there are shops - but prices rise quite significantly with altitude. There’s even a post-office at the top.

Rich: I have no idea. Plane tickets to Japan. I’d probably do it as part of a longer holiday. The starting point is a 2-3 hour bus ride from Tokyo (£30 return). Overnight accommodation at the 8th (out of 10) station is about £30. I can only assume other costs are exorbitant, because it’s in Japan.

The most important part is the hiking stick (£2.50) and £1 at each station to have the station’s mark branded into the stick to prove you’ve been there :)

  4. I’m kinda intrigued. Get me over my fear of flying again, and I’m in.

  5. K: You could always take a boat there. Set out now, and we’ll meet you next July? :)

  6. Nah. I don’t like boats either.

    I can swim though…

  10. Two virtuals around the summit crater. A webcam about 8 miles away and then a whole bunch of real ones between Tokyo and Fuji.

I _love_ the geocaching plugin for Google Earth :)

  11. Bit too tall for me. I fancied Mt Kilimanjaro, but I probably wouldn’t like the heat, so I’m thinking of just doing an Iceland treck; not too hilly and rather cold, just right for me :-)

  12. I’m still yet to conquer the hill at the end of my road.

Once I’ve done that, I’ll be in touch…

  13. So - are there another couple of famous mountains on some of the other islands we can do at the same time, ‘cos one at a time wouldn’t be any sort of a challenge would it?
