Tree

Wednesday 15th November

Took this a couple of weeks ago, just got round to putting it here. I think the tree could be more prominent, but it was on private land and I was stuck behind a fence.

My first real attempt to create a black and white image properly - using techniques of dodging and burning to change the balance of tone across various parts of the picture.

  1. Very atmospheric. The clouds look really soft focus, similar to a photo taken in the 1920s or earlier, yet the tree is quite sharp. Like it!

This is weird. I was convinced this morning that you put a link to my website on a new blog post, for some reason, but I couldn’t remember why. Checking it now, I realise it was obviously a dream I had a last night… Bizarre! …Or have you just removed it and you’re messing with my mind? ;-)

  2. I think you dreamt it. Last time I linked you was the sunsets, I think.

I’m not keen on the sharp/fuzzy difference. The reason is that the cloud was actually very low contrast, so I had to really pull on the levels to get what you see - which added noise. The tree was already high contrast. I’m thinking maybe I should add a little noise to the tree - so it can remain sharp, but also fit in better.

  3. I like it. Any plans on making posters?

  4. I’m not sure a poster would print adequately - I’d say about 12″ square would be the maximum. I’ll actually have a go at printing this one.

  6. Breathtaking!
I like the clouds this way. It looks like rain is falling out of them.

  8. I get you, Henners. I can envisgae a pair of castanets there cos the bush round the tree looks like a flamenco dress.

The clouds look superimposed due to the noise. Fab piccy, though.

  10. Nice. I like the graininess of the clouds. It would be good to see some more of your black and white photos!
