Mt. Fuji - 7th Station

Monday 27th November

As part of my plan to climb Mount Fuji, I’m currently doing the same elevation at the gym, just to get some idea of the scale.

Well, after nearly three weeks elapsed time and 1h 17m of walking time, I’ve made it up the first 500 metres. That’s 1/3 of the climb done, and 762 calories expended. The treadmill doesn’t go to the necessary incline, so I’ve walked 5.2km in ground distance to complete 30% of the height despite the fact the real trail is only about 6.3km long.

At this point, we’ve made it as far as the 7th Station rest stop. At this point, there’s still some greenery on the ground - we’re not quite up onto the plain rock slopes yet.

The treadmill doesn’t simulate the volcanic rock surface, the wind and rain, nor the thin air due to altitude. All that fun is to come with the real thing.

  4. I’m so far behind the average human population on fitness that I’ve been going to the gym for a couple of months, Rich. (I blogged it here)

Actually, that’s probably not true, but I’m probably behind the average human population who would consider walking up a mountain.

If you want some idea - I can only manage 2.1mph up a 15% incline without going into anaerobic respiration. That’s a slow plod and will take many hours to get up the mountain.

It’s not like I’m there all the time… once or twice a week for about 30 minutes at a time. Since it’s free with work, I thought I’d show willing.

  5. My girlfriend wanted me to join a gym that I could use in Nottingham and that she could use near Foss Park (it’s a chain so they have gym’s everywhere). Luckily it costs ~£52 a month each, so that put a stop to that plan! :-)
