Translation
Tuesday 28th March
Isn’t it great when people perform translations on your behalf. Yesterday I was presented with a problem from a colleague to which I didn’t know the answer but said I’d look into it starting this morning.
Around lunch-time, an email went out to the important people bearing the words:
“I’m waiting for Stu to tell me how [x works] but he’s promised that he will have an answer very soon…”
I can’t remember promising anything, nor mentioning any ‘very soon’ness. No pressure, then!
So true, and I hope that you’ll get it done in time. Usually the translation is necessary to remove their own head from the risk of being located on a block at any time in the near future, rather than any desire to put anyone elses there instead. In my experience at least.
My favourite* correspondences usually involve being copied in on an email thusly: “Kouros will arrange for the spreadsheet** to be done this morning for you.”
Shortly followed by another email direct to me “Hi Kouros, can you do this spreadsheet for me? It has to be done before lunch.”
* Loosest sense and all that.
** What is it with people and spreadsheets? There seems to be some sort of correlation between lack of skill in Excel and importance of spreadsheets in their lives.

It’s even more fun when you don’t actually get told that the buck has been passed to yourself and only find out about the impending deadline when it’s too late.
Mercifully rare, that one.

Now my boss has the habit of saying something like,
Oh we might be doing project x soon…. then a week later saying. Have you finished project x…. I said about it over a month ago….
