Wet Finger
Thursday 30th March
Do you hit a certain age where you instinctively lick your finger before leafing through papers? I remember at school the secretary used to do it and I thought she was odd. Now I find I’m doing it, too.
I have no idea when I started. Maybe I need to moisturise more?
i don’t do it instinctively but i certainly do do it.
when i think about my dry old hand that now resembles a kind of comedy root that someone has sent in to ‘that’s life’ (ha ha, esther, doesn’t this manky old parsnip look like a hand? - no, chuck it in the bin) holding the sweaty and clammy paw of a toddler i can see why i have to do it.
and i don’t just lick them; i spit on them.

May be she went on a special course?
I don’t know anyone else who does this.

Do you also move the page to get it into focus because your eye muscles don’t work properly any more?

I know someone who licks both thumbs before handling any paperwork; it can’t be age related, he’s loads younger than me

The lady in the post office used to wear a fingerette (or thumbstool) and when couldn’t find that, she’d squish the top part of her middle finger on to a moistened sponge. Is that helpful, Stu ?

I never lick my fingers before leafing through papers

It’s when you get past adolescence and are no longer covered in a thick layer of protective grease

LOL! I have noticed this recently too. How bizarre! A sure sign of maturity I reckon.
You’ll start opening carrier bags by blowing the top of them next.

It’s OK until you see the lady at the sandwich bar do it to pick up the paper napkin she’s going to wrap round your brie and grape baguette. She was horrified when I pointed it out to her, didn’t even know she was doing it.
What makes it even more bizarre is that they are very careful there about handling food with plastic gloves on and taking them off to take your money…
