Widescreen
Monday 3rd December
The widescreen aesthetic has now completely entered the public psyche, as evidenced by my sighting this morning of my first 16:9 For Sale* board…

So long, Golden Ratio and thanks for all the fish.
(* yes, I know it says ’sold’, but I still maintain that it’s a For Sale board)
Even the estate agent’s name is in widescreen, with the extra ‘a’.

Interesting about the golden ratio. I wonder how much of “it looks right” is simply a cultural conditioning thing. like red = evil in the West, but red = fortune in china.

Look at those horrible windows though. They’re completely out of ratio. What WAS the architect thinking?! They need to tear that building down. Make a 2.0 compatible house.

I dare you, nay, I double dare you, to put some gaffer tape down the sides to put it to 4:3

Interesting post. One quick question, doesn’t photographs use a different ratio??

Photos tend to be 3:2 (traditional 35mm) or 4:3 (traditional TV). My little camera also takes 16:9 for widescreen desktop backgrounds.
Though all of that is irrelevant if you crop artistically.

Hehe… I walked past the sign again this morning, K and realised that gaffer tape would also remove that terribly offensive pig. It’s probably called Muhammed or Abraham.

But 16:9 is the same as 4:3. You just simplify by taking the square root of both sides.
(yes yes I know that’s not right)

Haha, rich… I didn’t get as far as the brackets, and you had me going for a good minute or so with that one.

If you gaffer taped it to 4:3, not only would you be losing the pig, but you’d also be creating ‘aart’. You could sell it to Saatchi for millions.
