iPhone even when iDon’tWantTo
Wednesday 8th October
Ok… another problem with the iPhone. I have now made approximately 10 accidental outgoing calls with it. This should not happen.
There are certain screens where if you tap on a contact or a phone number it JUST MAKES THE CALL. You then have to find the ‘End Call’ button and press it, if the user interface has caught up in time.
Recent ones include a call to the USA which I fortunately cancelled before it was answered, and today a call to a car service company which they did answer, and I had to sheepishly explain that I was a complete retard with a gay phone.
If you accidentally make a call and then press the ‘home’ button, you’re now in the main menu WITHOUT an ‘End Call’ button to press and THE CALL IS STILL BEING MADE.
This is NOT ACCEPTABLE.
Before making a call, there should ALWAYS be a specific button you should press. So you KNOW you’re making a call. A confirmation if you like.
Really, Apple, this is NOT ACCEPTABLE.
Update: Ok… I discovered that the ’sleep’ button on the top of the phone will drop a call whatever state it’s in. That’s good. But it still doesn’t change the unacceptability of making calls without confirmation.
… yeah, and it should be called the “hang up” button.
But this is where Apple capitalizes on the “secret language” gene. You are now able to go to your goatee’d web2.0 friends, and as you loaf on your beanbags sipping decaf-low-cal-soyachocamochafrappucinos, someone is bound to say “bah! I can’t hang up my iPhone” and you can say “why, I discovered a simply delightful way to do that — you simpy press the sleep button!” extra white-person points for you!

Hold on… I don’t have any goateed web2.0 friends. The nearest candidate shaved the goatee off when everyone said it made him look like a child molestor.

oh, I thought you automatically got a load of them with your iphone, dressed in slightly pastel shades of secondary colours, one carrying a snowboard, one with a courier bag and square glasses, and one with a dorky hat with earflaps who does papier-mache.

Depends which bundle you get.

My Nokia touchscreen phone had a similar feature - anything that looked like a phone number could be used to make a call - but it was a two step process:
1. Tap on the number (to select it)
2. Tap on the “yes, do phone that number” icon that poppped up
Worked quite well - I don’t remember ever making a call accidentally. And if you change your mind, there’s a *hardware* button (”End”) to hang up, no matter what’s on screen.
