There's No Kind of Atmosphere

Tuesday 12th January

Gah! There’s this SEO company whose name I won’t mention because I don’t want them getting any advertising but if you fill in the missing words before those in the title you’ll be there… anyway, they phoned again today. I started off politely…

Them: Hello, this is A.Twunt from There’s No Kind of Atmosphere Ltd and I’m phoning you today to ask…
Me: Ah… sorry, you’re talking to the wrong person. Your company phones me about once a week, and I’m not interested thanks.
Them: Oh… erm, ok… do you know what we do? Have we explained our service to you?
Me: Yes, you have, and I’m really not interested. Thanks anyway, bye.
Them: But can I just ask you what…
Me: Um… it’s time to put the phone down now, ok?
Them: STUART… YOU ARE REALLY NOT…
*slam*

I would normally put the phone down gently, and I gave him several opportunities to say “Well, thanks for your time, goodbye.” But this time a *slam* was definitely called for.

I’ve asked to be put on their no-call list before, but they say they don’t have one. Silly billies.

  1. “Mr. Carter we offer insurance on your water supply pipe. For only £14 a month we offer you full –”
“No thank you I’m not interested”
“May I ask what you would do if your supply pipe broke due to ice in the middle of winter?”
    “I’m hanging up now.”

  2. Last time I had a similar phonecall I said “Oh, super. Can you please give me all the details?”

Then I placed the phone on the table and continued watching TV. I’ve no idea how long they left it before they hung up.

  3. Remarkable amount of non-swearification there. I’m afraid I’d not have been able to help myself, so good on you for not getting too wound up!

  4. Invest in a whistle. Forewarn them that you are going to blow it if they don’t go away.

If that latter doesn’t occur, use the former.

  5. I assume you are registered with the telephone preference service http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/tps/

If you are and they keep phoning you then unless you are a customer then they are breaking the law, speak to one of their management and inform them that you will be reporting them and they will suddenly stop phoning you.

I used to have a number of companies phoning me and as soon as I made a fuss and pointed out my registration with TPS it stopped.

    Hope that helps.

  6. You’re probably already aware of this – one of many such that I found…

  7. SEO companies are the worst for this because they really make the most of people’s ignorance about how the internet works. Where I used to work I was called by an SEO company who swore blind to me that they had reserved the top space on the first page of google for the words that you’d google if you were looking that kind of company. When I explained that, actually, my partner worked in SEO and that I knew that that’s not how Google works, they got really quite sniffy and angry with me. I told them that I thought it was inethical of them to out-and-out lie to potential clients, and they put the phone down on me. Score one to me, I think.

  8. We have been having problems with a scammer of some sort ringing and asking for Kronky, saying they’re from X bank. Kronky doesn’t bank with them, and as soon as you point it out they hung up. One day I decided to pretend to be Kronky. I then had a row with them, as they told me I couldn’t possibly be Mr Kronky, as I was a woman. I did the whole ‘how very dare you!’ routine. It was a good giggle.

Anyway. After a few months of it, we got totally fed up with them (TPS doesn’t stop overseas call centres or scammers) that we invested in one of these:

Not had any nuisance calls since, and it means we can decide to not pick up the phone to certain people, even if they have withheld numbers!
