Fresh Start!
Wednesday 21st October
Last time my blog went down, the server had gone boom. It hasn’t this time. But it was going rattle rattle rattle crash. Rattle rattle crash. Crawl crawl rattle crawl crash.
So I thought it was time to swap out the very very broken hard drive and completely reinstall. There was so much rubbish on there from many many years of poor organisation, and I thought it might be time for a fresh start. All the data is filed away somewhere in a dark basement with a sign saying “beware of the leopard”. The Tuesday Challenge pictures are even safer… they’re in a neat filing system.
But I think it’s fresh start time on the blog. Mainly because I tried to restore the backup and it didn’t work straight away, and it’s 8:58 and I have work to do.
ooh, “It sounds like SK2 has recently been updated on this blog. But not fully configured. You MUST visit Spam Karma’s admin page at least once before letting it filter your comments (chaos may ensue otherwise).”
Looking forward to the TuesdayChallengeOnAFriday..

I think that’s fixed now, Colin. Thanks.

8:58 you say?
The date on the post says that one of your clocks (or perhaps the WP timezone setting) is wrong…

8:58 BST = 7:58 UTC. I always run my server in UTC.

Why?

Why what? The UTC thing? Saves it getting confused and blowing itself up twice a year. I worked in TV long enough (in a company that didn’t stick to UTC) to avoid daylight saving!

If you prod wordpress carefully, it will advertise your posting times in BST even if the server time is UTC. Everyone’s a winner!

Beware the leopard … you got a Mac server?

Ahh, shame all your old posts have gone. Occasionally I like to browse through the old Tuesday Challenges

Who? Is this the inevitable fate of people who try to do independent things on the intramaweb? What about the goats of yesterday?

What _is_ UTC anyway? Anything to do with reliable old GMT?

GMT went the way of the cycle, the watt-second, and the degree centigrade. Personally I thought “1 Kc” looked much sexier than “1K Hz” but the world ignored me. Centigrade (scale of 100) made much more descriptive sense than “Celsius,” but again the world ignored me. A Joule is but a watt-second wearing a mask, and GMT is still GMT, even if the French insisted we call it UTC.
