Tuesday Challenge #35 – Background

Friday 30th October

This week’s challenge comes as a suggestion from PhotoZone via Peter Olding.

Backgrounds are important to a photograph. Why not find a good background first, then wait for something to happen in front of it.

Simple enough. Or is it? A perfect example might be Henri Cartier-Bresson’s famous Hyères:

Hyères, Henri Cartier-Bresson

Hyères, Henri Cartier-Bresson

Usual rules apply! Good luck!

  1. Christ on a hairy bike, _that’s_ a challenge!

  2. So find a good background, then have something happen in the foreground? Sounds like taking a decent photo. Pah!

  3. The Bresson photo is of something happening in the background. Too vague, man, too vague

  4. Kind of agree with Lord Hutton on this one. To me it is an uninteresting background, with a slightly interesting thing happening.

Yep, possibly some skill in pressing the button at the right time (in those days). Easier to take now, given my camera’s 6fps or whatever it is. (ha ha).

I suppose, if he had taken it today, it would have been of parkour/free running or a skateboarder on the railings.

I’ve taken a picture for this, just need to see if I get it off the camera before Friday?

  5. There was a lovely sky this morning on the drive into work, would have made a lovely background for something, but nothing was happening.

  6. It’s just struck me that the Cartier-Bresson example is almost the exact opposite of the challenge (as stated)

He appears to have found an interesting foreground, and waited for something to happen behind it.

Anywho. Despite hanging out in the center of town this week, with some fairly interesting backgrounds, shooting (erm, “lunch”) time ran out without anything interesting happening in my chosen locations. I had fun trying though!

  7. Blimey – it’s only Wednesday night isn’t it. I could have sworn it was Thursday – I’ve still got tomorrow!

  9. Oops, I came close to forgetting to enter this week! I’m in the routine of hearing the new challenge on a Tuesday, mulling it over all week, and taking the photo at the weekend.

Ah well, here’s my entry. Maybe it’s bending the rules a teeny tiny bit but never mind.

I’m really annoyed that I missed including a cyclist coming towards me, complete with bright headlight, by a few seconds. With a 3 second exposure it could’ve been lovely, and a tip of the hat to the challenge example too.
